Highly Efficient and Cost-Effective Twin Servers for High Performance Computing
Supermicro have evolved their patented Twin Technology to offer the world’s most advanced and complete HPC and Data Centre solutions.
The Twin systems provide multiple high-end computer nodes within a small rack footprint to give you performance and reliability while reducing running costs due to greater power efficiency and space saving. These systems are ideally suited to a variety of server tasks from traditional server roles through to clustering and rendering. With remote KVM management built in the Twin systems are an ideal building block for renderfarms for digital content creation, allowing small studios to setup large multi-processor render farms in a limited space.
The current generation features several performance enhancements over the previous models. Dual Processor Twin servers include extra memory capacity up to 1TB of Reg. ECC DDR3-1866 MHz memory in 16 DIMM sockets. Use either SATA 3.0 or SAS 2.0 (6Gbps) hard drives with options for 3.5″ or 2.5″ formats. Systems are available with Connect-X3 InfiniBand FDR(56Gbps)/QDR(40Gbps) InfiniBand ports with QSFP connector. PCI-E 3.0 technology and a variety of LSI RAID controller options for hardware and software RAID. All systems feature high-performance fans with a highly effective cooling architecture plus Redundant Platinum Level power supplies.
Based on the Intel Xeon Processor E5-2600 v2 & v3 product families, these feature rich, high performance Twin servers are the best choices for Mission Critical HPC, Hosting, Cloud, Big Data, and Data Centre applications. With enhanced power efficiency, high density, and optimized performance, these Twin SuperServer systems can significantly improve Data Centre TCO (Total Cost of Operation).
The Twin systems come in a variety of formats offering features for different tasks. Looking for raw processing speed then choose multiple nodes with the highest density. Need redundancy and/or capacity, choose a system with fewer nodes but increased drive bays and expansion slots. Twin systems are available in 1U, 2U and 4U formats with options for 2, 4 and 8 nodes. 1U Twin Systems
1U Twin is an innovative 1U rackmount system designed to increase computing density while reducing cost, energy and space requirements. With two systems (or two nodes) within a 1U space, the 1U Twin can support up to 48 physical processor cores – two systems each housing two twelve-core Intel Xeon Processor E5-2600 Series.
1U Twin Systems provide two hot-pluggable systems (nodes) in a 1U form factor. Each node supports the following:
- Two nodes in one 1U system – save chassis, power supply, and rack costs
- Double the density and computing power – save IT space rental costs
- Higher power utilization increases power supply efficiency – save energy costs

2U Twin Systems
The 2U Twin is a 2U rackmount system which builds on the principals of the 1U systems with further benefits such as redundant power supplies. 4U FatTwin™
Server Solution – Best TCO with Highest Performance-per-Watt/per-Dollar
The FatTwin™ is the latest addition to Supermicro’s evolving line of Twin Architecture SuperServer solutions. The 4U FatTwin greatly expands compute and storage capacities beyond Supermicro’s existing 2U Twin and 1U Twin SuperServer systems to achieve increased performance with lower power consumption. By virtue of its shared components the FatTwin improves cost-effectiveness and reliability, while its modular architecture makes it flexible to configure and easy to maintain.
The FatTwin is available in high-density 8 / 4 / 2 hot-plug system node configurations with a choice of memory capacities, hard disk drives, power supplies, front or rear I/O, PCI and networking options and more. Its high efficiency, highly effective shared cooling architecture allows the FatTwin to operate in high-temperature, free-air cooled environments up to 47°C, providing considerable cost savings and improved TCO. Versatile configurations allow the FatTwin to be optimized for many different environments including Data Centre, Cloud Computing, and HPC; Engineering, Research, and GPU/Xeon Phi projects; File and Storage Server deployments; and General Server and Enterprise Server applications.
The term Fat Twin is similar to other well-known IT industry expressions. For example, A Fat Tree Is a network topology that can be tailored to efficiently use any bandwidth made available by packaging and communications technology which has been widely used in the HPC environment. A Fat Client on the other hand is a computer in a client-server architecture that provides rich functionality independent of the central server. In this same manner, the FatTwin is a powerful yet flexible and highly scalable server system that provides extremely rich computing functionality representing the highest levels of energy efficiency and performance.
