One side effect of the digital revolution is that the volume of data generated just goes on expanding at ever increasing rates. But what if you need to move massive amounts of data between, for example, your capture site in the UK to your research labs in the US or from the film set to the post house for editing?

We worked out that to move 10 TB over the internet using an uncontended 8Mb line would take 17 weeks, assuming it ran perfectly 24x7. Using firewire drives is slow to down and upload (4 days for 10 TB we reckon) and if you loose one drive it's a disaster.

The FieldPac™ fibre-channel storage array is a revolutionary new method of moving massive amounts of data between sites. The two components are a rack mounted 3U docking station which connects to the host computer via high speed Fibre Channel, and a caddy unit with a massive raw capacity of 12 TB, normally configured as RAID 6 with a hot spare. Set up as RAID6 means that even with 2 drive failures your data is still intact. Additional docking stations and drive caddies can be purchased separately.

Initially designed for collecting seismic field data and transporting to data centres, the FieldPac™ is providing solutions in many diverse markets including geological research, the music and movie industries and video security.

The FieldPac™ contains many features unique in the storage industry, including a proprietary drive connection system capable of many thousand insertion and removal cycles and an advanced power management system.
